Residents in Rideau Lakes are being encouraged to attend a community-organized town hall meeting to discuss the proposed high-speed rail project and its potential local impacts.
The open-house style meeting runs Sunday, March 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Portland Community Hall. Organizers say the goal is to answer questions, share information, and address concerns about the proposed rail corridor.
A spokesperson from South Frontenac, Gord Bolton, will be on hand with maps and background information. Organizers stress he is not affiliated with Alto, the group behind the high-speed rail proposal.
The Township of Rideau Lakes is also sending an information letter to all taxpayers on Tuesday, March 3, outlining details of the project. A petition opposing a rail route through Rideau Lakes will be available the same day, with details posted on the township’s website.
Councillor Sue Dunfield says federal MPs including Michael Barrett and Scott Reid have publicly opposed the project.
Alto had been invited to present at a recent council meeting but withdrew after learning the municipality does not support the proposed southern corridor.
Residents are also encouraged to contact federal officials, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, Transport Minister Stephen MacKinnon, and Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin.
