At Mississippi Mills council’s committee meeting last month, councillors dealt with a concern that’s becoming voiced by more residents of smaller communities; increased housing density.
An application for a zoning bylaw amendment was on the table to permit the construction of a semi-detached dwelling on two severed lots in a neighbourhood dominated by single family homes on large lots in Almonte.
The request brought public comments from residents opposed to the development. Mayor Christa Lowry stated her community needed to respond to the lack of available housing choices.
She noted that pressures to increase affordable housing were higher than ever before and that smaller homes were not lesser homes. She said Council had a responsibility to help create housing for people who worked in regular but important jobs.
