Excitement is growing in Smiths Falls as the Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute basketball team prepares to compete at the OFSAA provincial championships in Pembroke from March 9 to 11.
Head Coach Dave Wells says the team’s success has been years in the making, with many of the players growing up playing together through junior and senior basketball.
The provincial tournament features 20 teams competing over three days, with only the top teams advancing to the medal round on the final day.
Wells says the close bond between players could be one of the team’s biggest strengths when facing the pressure of a provincial championship tournament.
For Wells, the run to OFSAA is especially meaningful after watching the players push through difficult losses and keep working.
Wells adds that community support has been a big part of their success.
Wells also praised the incredible support from local businesses and residents, saying the Smiths Falls community stepped up quickly to help fund the trip and cheer the team on.
We will provide updates on their progress throughout the tournament.
