Environment Canada has issued an Orange Warning as a significant freezing rain event is expected to move across parts of southern and eastern Ontario beginning late Tuesday night.
Forecasters say the storm could bring a prolonged period of freezing rain lasting up to 24 hours in some areas. Ice accumulation of 10 to 20 millimetres is possible, which could lead to dangerous conditions and widespread impacts.
Environment Canada says the system is being driven by a series of low pressure systems moving through the region. Freezing rain may fall heavily at times, and in some cases the precipitation may not freeze immediately, increasing the risk of localized flooding in low-lying areas.
Roads and sidewalks are expected to become icy and slippery, creating hazardous travel conditions, particularly during Wednesday’s commute.
Officials warn the weight of ice could damage trees and buildings and may lead to prolonged power outages.
Residents are being urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay clear of any fallen power lines.
