A 33-year-old Elgin man is facing multiple charges after an early-morning incident involving Ontario Provincial Police in Leeds County.
Officers say they found an idling vehicle on the shoulder of Highway 15 shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Friday, March 13, with the lone driver asleep at the wheel. When officers woke the driver, he allegedly put the vehicle in gear and sped away.
Police say the same vehicle was located idling again a short distance away moments later, and the driver was taken into custody. He was later evaluated by a Drug Recognition Expert.
Paul Peters has been charged with impaired operation, flight from a peace officer, failing to properly wear a seatbelt, and having liquor readily available in a vehicle.
He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in a Brockville court on May 1. His driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
Police remind the public to report dangerous or erratic driving by calling the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
