Perth council was asked to issue a letter of concurrence to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) for an application to install a new telecommunications tower at 25 Dufferin Road, at the Town’s Eastern highway entrance.
Deputy-mayor Ed McPherson was succinct in his opposition to the proposal.
He stated that with the MTO’s plans to redesign and rebuilt Hwy 7 through Perth, the idea of installing what he called an eyesore worked against the Town’s plans to improve the look of the area. He questioned why a new tower was needed in the first place.
Staff reminded council that decisions on tower locations were a federal responsibility and a municipality’s or private citizen’s opposition would have no effect on the outcome.
McPherson put forward motion directing staff to send a letter to ISED Canada stating Council’s opposition. It passed.
