Smiths Falls Police say four youths are in custody following a lockdown at Smiths Falls and District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI) Tuesday morning.
Officers responded to the school just after 11:10 a.m. on April 7 after reports that a pellet gun had been seized and other individuals may have had replica handguns.
The school was placed in immediate lockdown as officers arrived and began searching and securing the building. As a precaution, nearby CHIMO Elementary School was placed in a hold and secure.
Students and staff at SFDCI remained in lockdown for more than an hour while police and school officials conducted room-to-room checks and searched some lockers.
Police say the lockdown was lifted around 12:30 p.m. after the school was declared safe. The hold and secure at CHIMO Elementary was lifted earlier, just before noon.
Investigators say four students were taken into custody.
Officers seized a pellet gun resembling a Glock-style handgun, along with a replica .22-calibre handgun.
Police say incidents like this can cause significant stress for students, staff, and families, noting that emergency protocols are regularly practiced with local school boards.
The investigation remains ongoing, and more information may be released as it becomes available.
