The Seed Library is now open at the Perth & District Library, offering residents a free way to grow their own food and support a more sustainable community.
Each spring, the library sets up the seed lending program, allowing anyone to borrow packets of seeds for their garden.
In return, participants are encouraged to harvest seeds at the end of the season and donate some back, helping build a self-sustaining collection for future years.
Library Specialist Emily Fournier says the program is one of her favourites, noting that planning her garden helps her get through the final weeks of winter, while collecting seeds in the fall has become a fun and educational activity for her family.
For those new to the process, the library is also hosting a workshop called “Seed Saving for the Home Gardener” on April 21 at 5:30 p.m.
The session will be led by Maureen Bostock, a retired market gardener from Sweet Meadow Farm in Balderson, who will share tips on seed saving techniques and pollination.
The Seed Library is located on the main floor and is available during regular library hours while supplies last. More information, including workshop registration, is available online or by calling the library.
