Two foster parents in Smiths Falls are facing charges of Aggravated Assault following a joint investigation involving Child and Family Services (CFS) from Smiths Falls and Ottawa, the Smiths Falls Police Service Criminal Investigations Branch, and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).
Smiths Falls Police Deputy Chief Chris Kettyle told lanarkleedstoday.ca an investigation began in mid-February, following injuries sustained by a 14-month-old child.
The aggravated assault charges are, “due to the nature of injuries that the child presented with,” Kettyle said.
Kettyle says the police investigation, “has not determined any previous similar incidents,” and the child has been removed from the residence and remains under CFS care.
In a provided statement, Kettyle said the Smiths Falls Police Service, “remains committed to preventing harm to the community’s most vulnerable residents. This includes managing complex and sensitive investigations involving infants and children when injuries occur.”
The names of the accused will not be released to protect the identity of the child.
