The Highlands North Network (HNN) is working to strengthen social connections across northern Lanark Highlands, supporting residents aged 55 and older through funding, shared resources, and coordinated community programming. Established in February 2023 by Barb Young, Nancy Veary, and Rachael Heleniak, the organization was created in response to growing isolation in rural hamlets—an issue intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic—and continues to promote collaboration and well-being while advocating for social health to be recognized as a key part of Canada’s healthcare system.
Their community Roadshows 2026 are focused on social health and aging well in rural communities. They are inviting residents to come share what matters most, hear what others are experiencing, and help shape future supports across Lanark North. HNN president Barb Young tells us what spurred the idea of taking their network on the road.
She says decisions on creating age-in-place communities should be made by those who are approaching their time of needing assistance.
Attendees can expect a welcoming, guided conversation about social health and aging. Shared community insights (what’s working, what’s missing). A free catered lunch and a door prize draw (advance registration required). Young says, if you’re over 55, these events are a must-attend.
The five roadshows run from 11 am to 2 pm on different dates in April and May at the Darling White Lake Centre, the Tatlock Hall, the North Lavant Community Centre, Robertson Lake Hall, and the Middleville Community Centre. Find registration links and more details at highlandsnorthnetwork.ca
