Spring cleanup season is prompting renewed reminders about outdoor burning safety, with the Smiths Falls Fire Department urging residents not to treat brush fires as routine yard work.
Smiths Falls Fire Prevention Officer Jason Smith says people often underestimate how quickly a small debris fire can spread, especially in dry grass and windy spring conditions.
He says residents should first check municipal bylaws and permit requirements before lighting anything outdoors.
Smith says open-air burning rules vary by municipality, and materials like leaves, garbage and brush may be prohibited. He says many communities direct residents to compost sites instead.
He also stresses keeping water nearby, avoiding windy days and never leaving a fire unattended.
Fire officials say a little preparation can prevent a brush burn from becoming an emergency.
