A major construction project is now underway at one of Lanark County’s best-known landmarks.
Lanark County says the second phase of the 5-Arches Bridge rehabilitation project in Pakenham is now underway, bringing a full road closure at the bridge that will remain in place until November.
County officials say the closure is needed because of the complexity of the work.
Bonnechere Excavating Incorporated has been awarded the contract. Crews will complete masonry and stone repairs, improve the road approaches and install new lighting both beneath and on the bridge to improve safety while helping preserve the historic structure.
Public Works Manager Sam Poole says no through traffic will be permitted at the bridge while construction is underway to allow the project to be completed safely and efficiently.
A signed detour will direct drivers along Upper Dwyer Hill Road and Galletta Side Road to County Road 29. The county says the reroute is expected to add about 10 minutes to travel times.
Despite the closure, Lanark County says businesses in Pakenham will remain open and accessible throughout the construction period.
Officials are encouraging residents and visitors to continue supporting local shops, restaurants and attractions during the busy summer months.
The county says updates will be shared as the project moves forward.
