A public panel in Smiths Falls is aiming to bring the basic income debate closer to home.
The Lanark Basic Income Network will host the event Thursday, May 21 at Hanley Hall on McGill Street North. It begins at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
Rob Rainer, chair of the steering committee, said the evening will look at basic income from national and local angles.
Rainer said the panel includes some local players including Smiths Falls Mayor Shawn Pankow, Elle Halliday of Cornerstone Landing Youth Services and Ashley Saunders of The Table.
And Rainer says they have two national level guests as well.

He said the issue is becoming more urgent as food, housing and other costs rise.
A follow-up meeting is planned June 6 at the Perth and District Union Public Library.
