Carleton Place High School students helped younger students find their voices during a student-led event focused on leadership, connection and the move to high school.
The Upper Canada District School Board says CPHS hosted PAWsitive Voices on May 19, welcoming students from nearby elementary schools.
The event gave students a chance to share leadership projects happening in their own schools, meet peers from across the region and take part in group discussions and activities.
CPHS student leaders served as liaisons during the day. They talked about high school life, school spirit, extracurricular activities and the importance of building positive relationships with staff and other students.
Elementary students also had time to showcase their own work.
Caldwell Street Public School students spoke about clubs and supports meant to help every student feel included, including the “Stray Kids” club, which helps students looking for friendship or support.
Arklan Community Public School highlighted its clubs and spirit days, along with fundraisers and assemblies that help strengthen student voice.
Beckwith Public School students shared details about their Ronald McDonald House fundraiser and plans for assemblies focused on mental health and student well-being.
The day also included an “Ask a High Schooler” session, giving elementary students a welcoming place to ask questions about the transition to high school.
Community partners, including Open Doors for Lanark Children and Youth, UCDSB Mental Health Lead Lisa Livingston and Planet Youth, also shared resources.
Students toured the school, visited classrooms, explored intermediate clubs and watched a rock performance by the Music for Creating class.
Participants also received custom T-shirts designed by the school’s Communications Technology class.
