Two Bobs! Bob Izumi with our Bob Perreault during his Smiths Falls visit in early June
Canadian fishing legend Bob Izumi says a visit to Smiths Falls was about much more than rods, reels and stories from a long career on the water.
Izumi visited Smiths Falls and spoke about how fishing can bring families together, create lifelong memories and help children build a stronger connection to the outdoors.
The longtime angler says his favourite time on the water now often comes with his grandchildren. He says those simple trips remind him why fishing matters across generations.
Izumi says his own love of fishing started when his father took him and other children to fishing derbies when he was young. Those family outings helped lead to a career that has taken him around the world.
During his Smiths Falls visit, Izumi said families can use fishing as a way to get children outside and away from screens.
Izumi says time spent fishing can build strong bonds, while also giving young people a better appreciation for nature.
He says families in the Smiths Falls region are lucky to have outstanding fishing close to home.
Izumi says he has fished around the world, but Canada remains at the top of his list. His message in Smiths Falls was simple: take kids fishing, make memories and enjoy what the region has to offer.
For Izumi, fishing is still about family, community and time spent together outdoors and he hopes others will find those connections too.
