A new nature reserve near Clyde Lake is being called a positive step for conservation, community access and the future of local green space.
The Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust has acquired the Clyde Lake property, a scenic parcel in Lanark Highlands that will now be protected under its care.
MMLT president Steve Kotze says the group works to protect important natural areas across the Mississippi and Madawaska watersheds.
The land trust now cares for 17 properties covering about 4,300 acres. That includes well-known sites such as Blueberry Mountain and High Lonesome Nature Reserve.
During an interview with our Lynda D’Aoust, Steve Blight, chair of the property acquisition committee, said the Clyde Lake property is about 96 acres and sits beside the K&P Trail.
He told Lynda it includes forest, rocky terrain, wetlands and a stretch of virtual waterfront near the lake.
The property can be reached from Flower Station, with a walk of about two and a half kilometres along the K&P Trail. Blight says the route is flat, scenic and follows Clyde Lake.
Kotze told Lynda the land trust has already completed the purchase.
The group still has work ahead, including signs, a survey and future trail planning. The property was supported by federal and provincial grants, along with a major donation of land value from the former owners.
Kotze says community support remains important because the charity must raise money for stewardship, maintenance and long-term care.
