A popular family fishing event is returning to Smiths Falls this summer.
The Smiths Falls Police Association will host the Kids, Cops and Canadian Tire Fishing Derby on Sunday, July 5, from 10 a.m. to noon at Lower Reach Park.
The free community event gives children a chance to spend time outdoors, learn about fishing and connect with local police officers in a relaxed setting.
All children who attend will receive a welcome gift. Lunch will also be provided by the Smiths Falls Kinsmen Club.
Additional prizes will be drawn at 11:30 a.m.
Organizers are encouraging families to bring their own fishing equipment if they have it, because only a limited amount of gear will be available to borrow at the event.
The derby is supported by Keep Canada Fishing, a program of the Canadian National Sportfishing Foundation. The non-profit organization works to promote and protect recreational fishing across Canada.
The program has been introducing children to the outdoors for more than 20 years. Organizers say events like this help children connect with nature, build confidence, learn teamwork and take a break from electronics and social media.
Families interested in taking part are encouraged to pre-register by contacting Const. Dewey with the Smiths Falls Police Service at iwanttofish@sfps.ca
The event is sponsored by Canadian Tire Smiths Falls and the Smiths Falls Police Association.
Organizers say the goal is to create a fun, welcoming morning where children can learn new skills, enjoy the waterfront and maybe even reel in a great summer memory.
