A new episode of “Silence Broken: The IPV Talks” is taking a closer look at how intimate partner violence can affect children, even when they are not the direct target of abuse.
The latest conversation features Bob Perreault and Lanark County Interval House executive director Erin Lee. The episode follows a recent nearby tragedy and focuses on what families, schools, neighbours and community members should understand when children are living around violence, fear or high-conflict relationships.
Lee says the impact can show up in many ways, including changes in school, behaviour, sleep, routines and emotional reactions.
The episode also looks at safety planning for children, including helping them know who their trusted adults are and what they can do when they feel unsafe.
Lee says children can be pulled into the abuse through coercive control, custody battles, visitation, messages and manipulation after a separation. She says the risk should not be minimized just because both parents may say they love their children.
The discussion also highlights the role of community agencies, shelters, teachers, police, the courts, faith groups and extended family.
