Effective today, the manufacture and import for sale of several single-use plastics in Canada is prohibited.
This includes:
• checkout bags
• cutlery
• foodservice ware made from, or containing, problematic plastics that are hard to recycle
• stir sticks; and
• straws (with some exceptions)
The sale of these items in the country will end in one year, so businesses in the country can deplete their stock. As of December of next year the sale of any of the items won’t be allowed.
Several business in Lanark County have already banned the use of the plastics. The county rolled out its own voluntary ban on the single-use products in July of 2021.
At the time, then Warden Christa Lowry (Mayor, Mississippi Mills) said the move was an opportunity to educate, raise awareness to the issue and work with businesses to find solutions to removing the products from circulation.
