There’s a lot to keep in mind as a storm approaches, and that includes how to keep warm if the power goes out.
Dr. Linna Li, Medical Officer of Health with the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit says make sure you’re using heaters properly, and where they’re meant to be used.
That also goes for all other gas appliances like barbecues. Make sure they’re outside the garage before lighting them up.
You can always keep warm up in your car, or a local retailer running off a generator if need be. Many communities will open warming centres during winter power outages too.
If the power goes out, try to keep the doors on your fridge or freezer closed.
Dr. Li says if you plan on storing food outside the fridge watch the temperature.
Generally food will keep for 24 to 48 hours in a freezer without power, or 12 to 24 in a fridge.
You can also fill coolers with snow and pack food inside. But like the fridge, keep the lids and doors closed as much as possible.
The health unit also suggests:
· Have fuel in your vehicles and flashlights handy in case there is a power outage
· Make sure you have supplies of water and ready to eat food for family including pets
· Charge electronics for communications and checking weather
· Do not use propane heaters inside the house
