It’s not the news Lanark County residents looking to get down to the city to grab a beaver tail and a skate wanted to hear.
The world’s largest naturally frozen skating rink still hasn’t opened as Ottawa’s Winterlude Festival gets underway, putting the Rideau Canal Skateway on track to its latest opening date on record.
The National Capital Commission says the last time the canal opened this late was on February 2nd, 2002, but skating seasons have generally become shorter in recent years.
The N-C-C says until now, the weather has been too mild this winter to build safe ice.
It says crews are taking advantage of cold weather this week to get the canal open.
