February is Black History Month and it’s been recognized in a number of ways by the Upper Canada District School Board.
Throughout UCDSB schools this month classes will pay special attention to reading books and poetry by Black authors, participating in discussions surrounding race and culture, and much more.
Principal of Equity and Inclusion Dan McRae says teachers, principals and leaders can talk about the importance of Black history as much as they want.
But ultimately, their goal is to inspire students.
McRae says Black history is fundamentally Canadian history, and teaching such allows for a greater understanding of the nation’s past.
Stay tuned for a more in-depth story about a partnership between the school board, the Town of Smiths Falls and the Smiths Falls Police Service.
