The OPP released a statement yesterday explaining their use of last week’s public safety emergency alert.
On February 10th, Lanark County OPP recovered a stolen vehicle moving northbound on Highway 15 in Beckwith Township.
The lone driver of the vehicle, Dale Lewis Scott, was stopped via spike belt and arrested.
During the investigation OPP received information that two men, which have extensive history with the law, were armed with a handgun in Beckwith, and their names and photos were broadcast widely as residents were told to lock windows and doors and the males were armed and dangerous.
Public safety alerts are issued when an ongoing urgent significant threat of life is no longer in an isolated area.
The OPP say they have an obligation to balance the publics right to safety and an individuals privacy.
The alert was lifted about 30 minutes after these suspects, who the OPP determined through a search were not a threat to public safety.
