The Ontario Provincial Police has responded to a news story that broke about one of their officers being convicted of sexual assault while on paid leave.
In a statement released by Commissioner Thomas Carrique, he expressed his awareness of how troubling this situation is for the public, and that the OPP has been attempting to terminate the individual’s employment since their first conviction.
The suspended officer in question, Jason Redmond, was charged and eventually convicted of drug offenses in November 2015. He has been suspended with pay since then, remaining on the OPP’s payroll.
Commissioner Carique explained that for an officer to be suspended without pay, they must receive a jail sentence. Since Redmond was placed on probation, he continued to receive pay.
The OPP then began a sexual assault investigation in 2021 when they were made aware of the existence of a video Redmond captured while assaulting an unconscious woman in December 2017.
The OPP has appealed the decision to not dismiss Redmond, and the appeal hearing is scheduled for June 15th.
