The provincial government is hiring 40 adjudicators and five staff members at the Landlord and Tenant Board to chip away at the backlog of cases, and reduce decision timeframes.
Overall, it’s a $6.5 million investment.
Attorney General Doug Downey said they’re trying to clear the backlog that’s grown over the pandemic.
The government’s also looking to introduce policies to prevent rental units from being vacant for an extended period of time.
Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark says they’ll do that by addressing the language within the Residential Tenancies Act.
The province also plans to increase fines for RTA infractions to become the largest in Canada, up to $100,000 for an individual, and $500,000 for corporations.
