It’s the end of a long and windy road for the Municipality of Mississippi Mills.
Earlier last month, former mayoral candidate Steve Maynard was declared a vexatious litigant, after Justice J. Hooper tossed several cases and appeals made by Maynard from court.
This means Maynard must seek a judge’s permission before filing any future lawsuits against the township. Maynard pursued 23 separate court proceedings against the municipality. All of them except for one will be stayed.
In a statement provided to Lake 88 this week, mayor Christa Lowry said they were pleased with the decision, calling the process a long and expensive road which caused ongoing frustration and distress for the municipality and residents.
Full statement from Mayor Christa Lowry:
“We are pleased with Justice J. Hooper’s decision. This has been a long and expensive
road that has caused ongoing frustration and distress for the Municipality and our
residents.
It’s telling that the courts recognized that this individual’s behaviour flies in the face of
due judicial process – the Ontario Land Tribunal has gone so far as to say that one of
his appeals was “unfounded, vexatious, and a frivolous use of the Tribunal’s time and
the Town’s resources.”
This ongoing litigation has been a burden to Council, to staff and especially to the
taxpayers of Mississippi Mills. With this now behind us, we are keen to focus on
positive and productive work that benefits our community.”
