The Ontario Provincial Police in eastern Ontario continue to receive reports of emergency-grandparent scams targeting seniors.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says more than $9.2 million was reported lost to emergency scams across Canada last year, with Ontario residents making up for $5.4 million of those losses.
Emergency scams include variations of grandparent scams, use urgency and the manipulation of emotions to extort money from victims.
Fraudsters cold call seniors claiming to be a grandchild or family member saying they’ve been involved in an emergency situation and need money to sort themselves out.
The OPP ask you to have a conversation with the seniors in your life on what to do if they receive a call like this.
