Lanark Highlands Township’s approved a 12% tax rate increase for 2023, just before the May 31st deadline.
They finalized a tax rate increase before finalizing their budget to meet the deadline.
Councilor Steve Roberts was the lone opponent of the increase. Councilor Jeannie Kelso said she preferred an increase below 10%, but ultimately voted in favour of the hike. Councillor Allison Vereyken was absent from the meeting and did not vote.
This is the largest single-year tax increase in the Township’s history.
Reeve and Deputy Reeve Peter McLaren and Bill King feel some of the blame belongs to previous councils approving zero to minimal tax rate increases in the mid-2010s as the cost of services continued to climb, which put Lanark Highlands in this situation.
