Locals, paramedics and dignitaries were on hand at the Westport fire hall last week to welcome the new PRU.
A Paramedic Response Unit, or PRU, is now operating out of the Westport fire hall.
The Village as well as North Leeds will have coverage of the paramedic from 9:00am to 9:00pm seven days a week.
A PRU attends the scene to triage the patient. If a transport to hospital is required, they’ll call another ambulance with a pair of EMS to handle the transfer, while the first response paramedic returns to base and is free to attend the next call.
Mayor Robin Jones says the aim is to boost services and reduce wait times.
The same program has been in Athens for the past 18 months, with the data showing response times averaged 13 and a half minutes in 2021, over five minutes quicker than the previous year.
