The Town of Smiths Falls Fire Department swiftly responded to a fuel spill at Le Boat on Sunday, July 9th. Le Boat staff had already taken action by installing absorbent socks and pads to contain the spill. Firefighters coordinated with them to place absorbent booms around the affected boats and dock space, successfully mitigating further contamination.
Collaborating with a private environment cleanup company contracted by Le Boat, the Fire Department, Le Boat staff, and Parks Canada remained on scene until containment efforts were completed. The absorbent booms were removed on July 13th after the cleanup.
The Town of Smiths Falls acknowledges the community’s concerns and assures residents that safeguarding the environment and waterways is of utmost importance. Le Boat’s prompt response and collaboration demonstrated their commitment to environmental safety. The company is currently implementing protocols to prevent future incidents.
“We understand the community’s desire for action. Le Boat is re-evaluating their procedures to mitigate the risk of recurrence,” said Chief Administrative Officer, Malcolm Morris. “We urge compassion for the staff member involved, who deeply regrets this error.”
