An OPP officer has been cleared in connection to a shooting near Whitechurch.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit concluded there was no reasonable grounds to lay charges against the officer in a shooting incident back in September of 2018.
An officer (then with the Wingham Police Service) stopped a vehicle on Whitechurch Street where one man got out of the vehicle with a backpack, the driver remained inside and fled the scene.
The SIU investigation revealed the individual indicated that he was carrying a weapon in the backpack and that resulted in the officer drawing his weapon towards the individual.
Shots were fired resulting in the individual suffering a gunshot wound.
The officer also suffered head injuries as a result of the ensuing altercation.
A sawed-off shotgun and ammunition along with the backpack and cell phone were recovered at the scene.
