There’s still plenty of time to get some summer fun in before school starts and the season winds down.
But if you’re plans involve swimming at a beach, in a lake or one of our rivers the health unit wants you to be on the lookout for Algae Blooms.
That’s Kim McCann, Public Health Inspector with the Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit who says if you spot algae blooms, contact the Spills Action Centre at 1-800-268-6060.
McCann says be warry if the water doesn’t look right.
Swimming in algae can lead to a slew of health issues, including irritated skin. McCann says, avoid it and find somewhere else to take your dip.
McCann says we can help, because algae is the result of our actions.
She also notes that if algae is present where you’re camping or at your cottage, its best to bring in your own drinking water as boiling water with algae doesn’t purify it.
