Over the Civic Day weekend, there were eight tragic accidents in Ontario, leading to eight deaths. This was the highest number of deadly incidents this year during a long weekend. Six people died in car crashes, one on an off-road vehicle, and another in a boating accident.
The Ontario Provincial Police took strong action by giving out over 7,700 tickets to promote road safety.
They focused on stopping dangerous driving behaviors that cause many deaths each year, like speeding (4,341 tickets), drunk driving (182 tickets), using phones while driving (43 tickets), not wearing seatbelts (369 tickets), and not following Ontario’s Move Over Law (131 tickets).
The police want to remind everyone to drive responsibly and keep safety a top priority.
The police are hopeful for an improved record during the upcoming Labour Day weekend in September, the last long weekend of the summer.
