The Ontario government has announced a significant investment of over $4 million to aid victims and survivors of intimate partner violence, human trafficking, and child exploitation across the province. The funding, part of the Victim Support Grant program, aims to strengthen support networks and combat violent crime.
Lanark, Smiths Falls, and Kingston, will receive a total of just over $257,000 for local police services and community partners. These funds will be directed towards vital projects tailored to each area’s unique needs.
In Lanark County, the Ontario Provincial Police will join forces with Lanark County Interval House for the Collaborative Approaches to Survivor Engagement (CASE) Upstream project. This collaboration aims to increase the availability of victim advocates while providing essential training and education programs. These initiatives will empower victims and survivors of domestic violence and intimate partner violence to access resources and navigate the justice system effectively.
Smiths Falls Police Service is partnering with the community to address the rising challenges of intimate partner violence and child exploitation in Lanark County. The funding will be used to enhance victim support by offering purposeful and effective police officer training, strengthening collaboration with community partners, and conducting public education and youth outreach programs.
In Kingston, the Kingston Police, in collaboration with Kingston Community Collaboration, will utilize the funding to develop and deliver a comprehensive three-day training course for frontline officers on the topic of intimate partner violence. This initiative will also establish case management mechanisms and multi-sector situation tables to ensure a more effective and coordinated approach to supporting victims.
LFK MPP John Jordan highlighted the collaborative impact of this funding in assisting victims of gender-based violence. Solicitor General Michael Kerzner emphasized the critical role of victim support in combating violent crime and ensuring that victims are not left behind.
The Victim Support Grant (VSG) is an integral part of Ontario’s Guns, Gangs, and Violence Reduction Strategy, further complementing the province’s ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking through the Anti-Human Trafficking Strategy and Combating Human Trafficking Act. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to creating safer communities and supporting those affected by violence and exploitation.
