For many in the community, thumbing through the pages of the Perth Courier, Smiths Falls Record News or the Carleton Place-Almonte Canadian Gazette was a highlight of thew week. But, as you have no doubt heard Metroland Media Group has decided to stop printing most of its community newspapers, laying off hundreds around Ontario, including many in Lanark county.
As people digest that decision, questions are being raised about its impact on journalism as a whole.
President of the Canadian Association of Journalists Brent Jolly says he worries this will leave more people turning to unverified information.
Jolly says those wanting to pursue journalism as a career have fewer options now than ever before.
He adds that last Friday’s announcement was truly a dark day for media.
Jolly says the Canadian Association of Journalists will approach all levels of government to support local news.
In total, more than 600 people were laid off.
