Public Health Ontario reports that two more horses in Lanark County have tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis virus (or EEEV).
It’s normally found in wild birds but can occasionally spread to horses and humans through the mosquito bites.
But as the health unit’s Senior Public Health Inspector Kim McCann says, it’s very rare.
There have only ever been three cases of EEEV in humans recorded in Ontario.
The health unit is issuing a reminder to take precautions against mosquito bites, just in case.
