Longtime Perth volunteer Sue Doran has been presented with the Perth Medal.
It fittingly happened on Remembrance Day at the Legion.
Mayor Brown and Councillor Gary Waterfield recognized the 2023 recipient for her 15 years work in the community. The former school teacher spent most of her volunteer hours helping veterans. Spearheading the Banner program in town is just one of the many efforts she’s been a part of.
The following was shared by the Town of Perth on their Facebook Page:
The Perth Medal is a Mayor’s Award that is presented annually, to an individual showing exemplary service to the community through volunteerism, on a long-term basis, with no monetary gain to themselves.
Sue Doran consistently puts herself out there in her effort to support and provide for people.
Following her retirement after 31 years as an elementary school teacher, Sue had time to devote to her passion – helping veterans. Through the Perth Legion, Branch 244 Perth-Upon-Tay, Sue spearheaded Catch the Ace, at a time when the Legion was struggling financially.
With and through the Legion, her work to recognize and improve the lives of veterans has been tireless.
Most well-known for her work on the Pathway of Heroes Banner Program, she also organizes drive-by parades and birthday celebrations for veterans, worked alongside Stacey Niceliu to have a WWI and WWII memorial bench installed behind the Cenotaph, advocated for a memorial bench to be installed in memory of Eric Devlin, and much more.
She was also involved in facilitating the purchasing of sports equipment for every classroom in Perth from kindergarten to grade 8, and was one of three members of the Perth Splash Pad Committee.
