Smiths Falls council is moving ahead in the development of a five storey building that would include both commercial and residential units.
The town received the application by the owner of five consolidated parcels of properties on Main, George North, and William West Streets in May near St. John Church.
Hammer and Nails Developments wants to knock all existing structures down, which includes an occupied home, and construct the mixed-use building which would have two commercial units on the floor and 36 residential rental units, nine deemed affordable.
Councillor Stephen Robinson is on board.
Mayor Shawn Pankow wants to ensure moving forward that the affordable units are indeed actually that for most residents.
Councillor Chris McGuire was an opponent of moving ahead, stating his displeasure that an occupied home would be knocked down to create additional parking spaces when he says the region already has ample and empty nearby lots.
