Chair of the steering committee of the Lanark Basic Income Network, Rob Rainer says they’re hard at work to try to get the system in place, which would help working people make ends meet.
Rainer tells myFM there’s strength in numbers when it comes to the growing movement.
He says locally they’ve become a strong advocacy group, and that’s something that has echoed through the country.
He adds that one bill is also before the Senate on Parliament Hill.
Rainer notes that the previous provincial government had implemented a three-community pilot project in the province. It was due to run for 36 months but was cancelled by the current government after just 15 months.
One thing the Chair wants to get across is that a basic income could benefit all of us in one way or another and is not just aimed at low-income earners.
He sys the group has three committees, a steering committee, an outreach committee, and a polictical outreach committee. They’ll be holding another public meeting on the 24th at the Library at 2:00.
On the political front, Rainer says there’s been positive response.
Once again, they’re looking for numbers. More voices will have a greater impact on their efforts. If you’d like to get involved, call 613-267-6428 x 104 to find out more or sign up.
