The Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is reminding us all to ensure we’re vaccinated against meningitis as we’ve seen a surge in cases in our neighbouring regions over the past five months.
There haven’t been any reported in LGL yet, and they’d like to keep it that way.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Linna Li tells myFM says meningitis is not to be taken lightly. Ever.
So what do we look for symptom-wise? We turn to Jennifer Adams, Manager of clinical services for the answer to that question.
Meningococcal bacteria spreads person to person through close and direct contact, like open-mouth kissing or sharing of drinking cups, eating utensils, vapes, etc.
The number one defense is a vaccine. Meningococcal C vaccine is given at one year of age and meningococcal ACYW-135 vaccine is administered in Grade 7.
Dr Li says they encourage anyone who is 25 years of age or under to make sure they’re update with their vaccinations.
Should you have concerns about the bacteria, you’re encouraged to contact your health care provider.
