Construction on the Confederation Bridge will be pushed to 2025 after a change of heart by Smiths Falls council.
They gave staff direction to prepare for design proposals for a timber bridge, backing away from a previous decision to build a steel bowstring bridge.
Councilor Jennifer Miller has long talked about the need of getting the new bridge open, but Monday’s debate changed her opinion.
Director of Public Works and Utilities Paul McMunn estimates a timber bridge with regular maintenance can last at least 75 years while the steel bridge life expectancy was anywhere between 50 to 75.
