An NDP bill, Declaring Intimate Partner Violence an epidemic in Ontario is getting rare backing from all parties at Queen’s Park. It passed second reading at Queen’s Park last night and has been sent to committee.
Paul Calandra, Government House Leader says the province’s standing committee on justice will be performing a study on the matter too.
NDP Leader Marrit Styles now is the time to act, after 30 women were victims of femicide in 30 weeks last year, 58 overall. She referred to the inquest into the 2015 deaths of Nathalie Warmerdam, Carol Culleton and Anastasia Kuzyk that produced more than 80 recommendations towards ending IPV in Ontario.
You can learn more about those recommendations here. 88.1 myFM has been speaking with Lanark County Interval House Executive Director Erin Lee about each recommendation and the impact it will have on the fight against IPV.
The provincial declaration follows dozens of communities and counties making the same move including municipalities in Lanark and Leeds, and the Town of Smiths Falls.
