As we told you earlier, the province is another step closer to declaring Intimate Partner Violence in Ontario an Epidemic.
A bill sponsored by the NDP, Bill 173, passed second reading at Queen’s Park with the rare support of all parties.
Our expert in the field is Erin Lee, Executive Director at Lanark County Interval House. She tells us our county deserves a pat on the back.
Lanark County was the very first to declare IPV as an epidemic, other counties and municipalities soon followed including most in our listening area.
Lee says she would like to see the process move quicker though because the violence is showing no sign of stopping.
The move comes almost two years after the recommendations from the Jury in the Inquest into Ending Intimate Partner Violence in Renfrew County were issued. Lee says it would have been nice to see the process move quicker, even when it comes to yesterday’s vote.
It’s not known how long the bill will be in committee, but the Government House Leader, Paul Colandra is promising a full and comprehensive review.
Lee also recognizes and applauds the effort to get this far in the province has been a massive effort by many.
