This week is National Immunization Awareness week (Apr. 22-30). This year the theme is Protect your future. Get immunized.
Dr. Linna Li, Medical Officer of Health with the Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit says vaccinations for common diseases that have been around for years are often forgotten unless of course a case presents itself, like recently with measles in parts of the province.
Immunization Coordinator Erin McLean says the good news is that parents are responding to the immunization letters from the health unit to make sure their kids shots are up to date.
McLean adds that parents can book an appointment for their child online at the health unit’s website. Just click here.
Doctor Li also wants to make sure that adults realize that making sure vaccines are up to date, isn’t just for kids.
For example, you can get shingles vaccinations and should also get a shot for tetanus every ten years. Those 65 and over can also get a vaccine to prevent certain types of Pneumonias.
