Ah the summer days are almost upon us. Beautiful days on the lake, hikes through the incredible trails in Lanark County, and scratching those darned mosquito bites.
Preventing mosquitoes is key to avoiding those itchy bites and reducing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, dengue, and Zika virus. Here are some effective measures:
- Remove Standing Water: This is so important. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so regularly emptying containers like flower pots, birdbaths, and gutters can eliminate breeding sites.
- Use Mosquito Repellent: Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Make sure you use kid-friendly repellents on our younger population too.
- Wear Protective Clothing: Cover exposed skin with long sleeves, pants, and socks to reduce mosquito bites.
- Install Screens: Use screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. It’s okay to give the kids a good talking to if they leave the door open.
- Maintain Your Yard: Keep grass and shrubbery trimmed, as mosquitoes like to rest in shady areas.
- Use Mosquito Nets: Make sure you have netting on outdoor structures like gazebos, especially in areas where mosquito-borne diseases are prevalent.
By incorporating these preventive measures into your routine, you can significantly reduce mosquito populations and protect yourself from their annoying bites.
