The Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit monitors and reports on several reportable diseases as a way to keep the public informed and safe.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Linna Li tells myFM which illness qualify.
An example of a reportable disease the health unit would follow-up on is salmonella. A Public Health Inspector would want to speak to an infected person because they could potentially spread the bacteria to others.
Dr. Li says most are not common.
So, think “the pandemic” as a perfect (and extreme) example.
Dr. Li adds that public health institutions such as our health units act as a centralized way to monitor these types of diseases and infections.
We’ll have more on the topic next week.
You can listen to the full conversation with Dr. Li and Public Health Nurse Vanessa Gill below.
