Smiths Falls Police Service Chief Jodi Empey
Our series on the need for further bail reform in our country continues.
We’re talking about it locally after a situation in Smiths Falls that saw a repeat offender, in and out of custody four times in a month, commit more crimes every time they were released.
Smiths Falls Police Chief Jodi Empey tell myFM bail reform came into place earlier this year.
But Empey says there’s more work to be done.
The surety is someone who would post bond for the accused. Chief Empey says they must also follow guidelines set out by the court.
Failure to do could result in serious consequences for that surety if the person they posted bail for break conditions of their release. Accused individuals have been using professional Sureties who have no intention of following through.
Chief Empey says the Smiths Falls Police Service is on top of it.
Next week We talk about how the SFPS advocates for victim’s rights.
