With the Health Unit’s beach testing program ending for 2024, swimmers may be wondering if it’s still safe to take a dip during warm September days.
The Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit has shared a few key tips to help assess water quality before swimming:
- Avoid swimming if the water appears cloudy due to waves or recent rainfall. Cloudiness may indicate high levels of bacteria.
- Skip shallow, sheltered, and warm waters, as they can also harbor bacteria.
- Watch for birds or bird droppings on the beach, as they can contaminate the water and increase the risk of illness.
By following these guidelines, you can make informed decisions and ensure a safer swim this fall.
