The Town of Smiths Falls has pledged to bring back the Spirit of the Drum Powwow in 2025 after the unexpected cancellation of the 2024 event due to funding challenges.
At the first council meeting of the year, one of the powwow organizers, Josee Bourgeios was introduced and provided some history of the event which began in 2017, noting how unique it was.
The powwow, a cornerstone of local reconciliation and cultural celebration, was called off last year after funding changes and mismanagement disrupted planning efforts. The town has begun working with lead organizer Josee Bourgeois and Algonquin partners to secure funding and enhance preparations for 2025. Josee spoke to how important these celebrations are.
Josee stated how proud she was of Smiths Falls council and the local school board in supporting the 2025 pow wow.
Smiths Falls has also committed 2025 budget resources to ensure the event’s return. “We look forward to hosting a vibrant and inclusive powwow June 14th and 15th,” the town said, reaffirming its dedication to reconciliation and community engagement.
