Lanark County is gearing up for growth with a fresh approach to planning. The Upper Tier government has a key role in assessing population, employment, and land needs under the Provincial Planning Statement (PPS).
To ensure compliance and support infrastructure planning, the County regularly conducts Growth Management Studies (GMS). In late 2023, the County enlisted consulting firm Watson to lead the latest study. By November 2024, a draft report was shared with County Council.
Mike Dwyer, planning manager for the County recently reviewed the results with Perth Council and indicated trends in housing that can be expected going forward.
Dwyer broke down the population projections for Perth, giving councilors a view of how the Town will grow over the next 26 years.
The County report on growth refers to Perth as an urban community many times, a title that councilor David Bird took exception with, along with the lack of input residents have in future development,.
The County plans to engage the public during a consultation period in early 2025. Draft findings, including projections specific to Perth, will guide local policies and strategies.
Officials stress these numbers are meant to shape planning, not limit growth. Residents are encouraged to participate and help shape the region’s future.
